'Vatican Option' Palestinians Consider

Thursday, September 8, 2011
In search of independence, sovereignty and political victory the United Nations this month, Palestinian officials are considering a formula that sounds strangely appropriate the Holy Land: they call it "choice at the Vatican."

Option requires a request by the UN General Assembly to upgrade the status of Palestinians to the "Observer package", which are not members of the "observer state" non-members. It is the Palestinians to raise the same level of interest of the pope.

Palestinian leaders believe that the upgrade is an important step toward the official government and pave the way for the accession of other Palestinian organizations - such as the most controversial, the International Criminal Court. "This is a significant change in the whole state," said Ammar Hijazi, Senior Legal Adviser in the Palestinian leadership. "" State "title to open the door for us."

However, one of the main reasons why the "choice of the Vatican" is to talk to diplomats in New York, Brussels and in Ramallah, are as follows: space is given not only the Security Council, but the UN General Assembly, the body, which the Palestinians can not normally be sure of a majority of support.

This means that the application is a much better chance to succeed in any attempt to join the UN as a State - a decision the Security Council. U.S., Israel is opposed to all forms of Palestine to update the United Nations has made it clear that it will veto any Security Council strategy. European governments also opposed the application for full UN membership.

Palestinian leaders claim they have abandoned their goal to become UN Member State, that they can continue side by side, "the Vatican". Speaking of that, private, however, many of the Palestinians, officials admit that they are now only likely to continue to update the General Assembly.
